Empathy in 5 Steps

Empathy in 5 Steps is a comprehensive, research-based approach that helps build, nurture, and repair relationships. Empathy is a skill—and like any skill, it can be developed. We have designed courses to help you strengthen and apply this ability.

The C.W.I.F.E Approach

Empathy in 5 Steps is a set of 5 skills, that when used in order can help you understand someone's experience at a deep level. The 5 steps are Context, Wants, Intereference, Feelings and Evoked Responses. These steps make up our flagship approach to empathy that we call the C.W.I.F.E approach. Take a look at the 5 steps:

01

Context

In the CONTEXT step, you will explore what is happening in the person’s current environment.

02

Wants

In the WANTS step, you will explore what a person wants based on their context.

02

Interferences

In the INTERFERENCES step, you will explore any obstacles that are interfering with a person's ability to achieve their wants.

03

Feelings

In the FEELINGS step, you will explore how a person feels when they do not achieve their wants..

03

Evoked Responses

In the EVOKED RESPONSE step, you will explore a person's reaction to their feelings.

About the Author of C.W.I.F.E

Dr. Volney Gay
In his 30+ years of clinical experience and research, Dr. Gay discovered that empathy consists of five components—rather than just one or two aspects, such as feelings. To make these components practical, he developed Empathy in 5 Steps (known as the C.W.I.F.E. Model) to help you master and demonstrate them when connecting with others.

Dr. Volney is a psychoanalyst, Professor Emeritus at Vanderbilt University, author of ten books, and a Supervising Psychoanalyst at both the St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute and the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC).
